Hydration in cold climates
Updated: Jan 31
Did you know that your hydration needs aren’t much different in winter compared to summer? Of course, we sweat more in hot climates but we also lose more water through urination and respiration in a cold environment.
Furthermore, in winter we feel less thirsty and tend to drink way less than our bodies require. This results in a decrease in blood volume and chances are higher that your body undercools.
On average, men require 3.5 liters of water and women about 2.7 liters of water per day (note: food contributes about 20% of the recommended daily liquid intake, and even tea, coffee, and that occasional soda counts towards your daily fluid intake).
How to stay hydrated in winter
Keep your fluids liquid
If you exercise in really cold weather, make sure your drinks do not freeze. The best way to do that is to fill up your bottles with warm water and electrolytes. 1 BIX effervescent tablet contains 12 vitamins and minerals including the 4 main electrolytes sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium, and will make sure your water stays liquid.
Start your training and races hydrated
Studies have shown that adding electrolytes to your water prior to a race or hard training session improves your performance since electrolytes help your body to store fluids which is essential for your workouts in summer and in winter.
Taking 1 BIX effervescent tablet the night before a race or a hard workout as well as before the actual race or training session will ensure that you are well hydrated. It will make you feel more energized and support your endurance performance.
Drink warm beverages
When it is cold outside, you might prefer drinking warm beverages to cold ones. With that said try and take some tea with you in a Thermo bottle or add a tablet of BIX to your warm water and enjoy this immune-boosting and warming drink!
Have water next to you
Wherever you are, take a water bottle with you and sip on it throughout the day.
Try and drink 1 glass of water every hour, but be sure to spread it out by sipping on it since our bodies can digest water only at a certain rate and too much water in one go will be excreted. With its 12 vitamins and minerals, only natural colors & flavors, and only 8 KCAL per effervescent tablet, BIX adds a nice flavor to your water and makes it easy to drink.
